Telescopes for Schools

Find out how your school could win a 6-inch or 8-inch Dobsonian Telescope!

In order to promote interest in astronomy and science education in general, three very high quality telescopes have been purchased to be donated to specially selected schools this year.  Three telescopes are all that I can afford at this time as the money is coming from my own pocket.  Whether or not I continue to donate that many telescopes in the future will be determined by the amount in donations this website receives; otherwise, I will have to restrict donations to one telescope per year (if possible).

The two smaller telescopes have respectably large 6-inch diameter primary mirrors of f/8.0.  The largest telescope has a whopping big 8-inch f/4.7 mirror!  All three telescopes feature top quality optics with reflecting surfaces corrected to 1/12 wave, rugged metal optical tube, high quality achromatic finder scope, 2 inch metal rack and pinion focusers with 1.25 inch adapter, 25 mm Plossl eyepiece, 9 mm Plossl eyepiece, moon filter, 2x Barlow, spring-tensioned (for tube balancing) Dobsonian mount, and metal eyepiece rack.

To put your elementary, middle, or high school into contention for one of these fine instruments, the teacher of the school's astronomy program should submit a description of 250 words or less outlining what his/her school has done to promote an interest in astronomy and space-related fields among its students and/or the public in general.  Please indicate whether or not your school already possesses a telescope of 6 inches aperture or larger since need will also be taken into consideration.   Competition is open to schools in the USA only.  The school that is judged to be the most noteworthy will receive the 8-inch telescope.  Two runner-up schools will be awarded a six inch telescope.

Name, address, and phone number of the school must be included with the entry.  I will independently verify that any school that I choose exists before I announce any winners to circumvent fraudulent entries.  All entries must be received prior to midnight January 3, 2005 to qualify.  Winner will be chosen by February 28, 2005.  My decision will be final.   E-mail entries to Singularity Scientific.

This website and the rest of  the other services that I do for the public cost money.   Please donate whatever you can spare.
